Hello, I’m Aslıhan, a psychologist and art therapist dedicated to supporting children and families facing chronic illnesses, such as cancer and organ failure, for nearly 20 years. My mission is to make hospitals more child-friendly while addressing the emotional needs of patients and their loved ones. I offer psychological support during these challenging times, aiming to create a compassionate and understanding environment. I hold degrees in Psychology and Sociology from Koç University, where my passion for working with children was fueled by extensive volunteer work in various projects. After moving to the United States, I completed my specialization in Art Therapy and Mental Health Counseling at Lesley University. There, I utilized play and creativity as therapeutic tools for pediatric patients and families dealing with physical trauma and chronic illness. After returning to Turkey, I volunteered as an art therapist in pediatric oncology and hematology units in various state hospitals. In 2011, I began working as a psychotherapist at the American Hospital in Istanbul, gaining experience with adult patients in various departments. Then, in 2015, I transitioned to Koç University Hospital’s Department of Pediatrics, focusing on pediatric patients and their families—a long-held aspiration of mine. In January 2019, I founded the “Happy Child, Happy Family Program” to help children and families navigate the emotional and social challenges associated with hospitalization and illness. Throughout my career, I have collaborated with multiple foundations to reach more children. I served as a consultant and trainer for The Hope Foundation for Children with Cancer (KAÇUV) on two projects: Play is My Medicine in 2013 and Adding Color to Life with Art in 2016. In 2019, I partnered with the Ministry of Education as a trainer in their Teacher, Please Hold My Hand project to support the education of children in medical settings. Together with some enthusiastic colleagues who share my vision, we initiated the Hospital Toolbox Project in 2020, aiming to extend our reach to children beyond our physical barriers. Thank you for joining us on this journey!
